My personal work is strongly influenced by my teaching practice. I believe that in order to teach something, one must first have a strong mastery of the subject, far beyond what is asked of the students. This idea motivates me to create art in a variety of media. I am frequently picking up new materials and teaching myself new techniques. It's important to me to be able to introduce my students to a variety of media that I personally have a strong background in.

Thematically, my work is also varied. I have tackled a range of concepts from the peaceful beauty of nature to visceral frustration and aggression. I create work that is completely representational, completely abstract, and a mix of the two. My work changes based on experiences I have in my life. I think it is natural for an artist's work to go through different phases because life itself is fluid. The connecting thread through all of my work is an interest in exploring the nuances of light and color. I notice that when visiting museums and galleries, my eye is always drawn towards pieces that use light and color in an aesthetically pleasing or unusual way. With every new piece, I am developing my own understanding of the power and subtleties of light and color.
